LTA Rolls Out Comprehensive Cycling Network for Safer, Smoother Riding Experience in Bedok Town

News Releases 20 Jan 2018 cycling paths cycling network Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs)

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has completed a 13km network of dedicated cycling paths in Bedok town.

2          Bedok is the second town in Singapore – after Ang Mo Kio – to feature red cycling paths. These paths help to alert pedestrians to the presence of cyclists and personal mobility device (PMD) users and have proven to be very popular amongst Bedok residents as they are easily distinguishable from the regular footpaths.

3          Guest-of-Honour Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister for Manpower and Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC, launched the cycling network this afternoon at Heartbeat@Bedok. Members of Parliament for East Coast GRC and Feng Shan SMC, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Chairman of the Active Mobility Advisory Panel, and other Panel members also graced the event.

Seamless connections to key amenities

4          With the dedicated cycling paths, it is now more convenient and safer for residents to cycle or ride their PMDs between their homes and major transport nodes, such as Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, as well as key amenities, such as Bedok Mall and the hawker centres. When NParks’ Outdoor Play Corridor[1] is fully completed, residents can also use the new cycling paths to ride to Bedok Reservoir Park and East Coast Park.

Features to enhance safety and riding experience

5          To make it more conducive for cycling and use of PMDs, LTA has also incorporated features such as bicycle crossings for cyclists and PMD users to use when crossing the road, more bicycle parking boxes at key destinations, and wheeling ramps at staircases. LTA has also made infrastructural improvements to enhance the safety of all path users. For example, LTA has reconstructed a bus stop near the popular Block 85 market along Bedok North Road to provide more space behind the bus stop, so that pedestrians and active mobility users can share the space safely. Please refer to the Annex for a map of Bedok Cycling Network and its features.

Future integration with new MRT stations

6          When the new MRT stations[2] in Bedok town on the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line are operational after 2020, LTA will expand the existing cycling network to connect to these stations. These stations[3] will also feature underground bicycle parking facilities which offer sheltered bicycle parking for cyclists.
