Joint News Release by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) & Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) - Shining the Spotlight on the Very Best of Singapore’s Transport Workers

News Releases 01 Nov 2018 Transport Gold

The Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) as well as public transport companies and associations celebrated outstanding service rendered by workers in the transport industry at the 19th National Kindness Award – Transport Gold 2018, held this morning at the Istana.

2.     President Halimah Yacob graced today’s awards ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour. The Award recognises transport workers for their acts of kindness, with the hope that they will inspire other transport workers to go the extra mile. A total of 445 outstanding individuals from bus, rail and taxi operations, customer service, and automotive and engineering sectors received the awards. Among them, 25 recipients were conferred the highest accolade for providing exceptional service to create memorable experiences for commuters in their daily journeys.

3.     With over 6 million journeys made daily across our bus, trains and taxis, our transport workers interact with thousands of commuters every day. They play a crucial role in keeping commuters moving, ensuring we get to work, to school or back home safely, and on time. Many of them remain on their feet for hours each day. Yet, they continue to serve commuters with passion, enthusiasm and a smile.

4.     Amongst these extraordinary individuals are Mr Hok Swee Kwan, a taxi driver with ComfortDelGro Taxi who stopped to help a motorcyclist injured in an accident, using his vehicle to protect the motorcyclist from oncoming traffic; Ms Tay Yu Ying, a customer service officer from Go-Ahead Singapore who personally returned a lost wallet to its owner; Mr Sam bin Ali, a bus captain from SBS Transit who went out of his way to help a special needs child find his way after he unknowingly boarded the wrong bus; and Mr Prakash Anand Mahalingam from SMRT Automotive Services Pte Ltd, who calmly and swiftly rendered assistance to a taxi driver injured after an accident at his workshop. These are a few of the many inspiring stories amongst the award winners.

5.     There are many others who go the extra mile to spread kindness and deliver exemplary customer service, and we would like to congratulate all of them for their outstanding service. Please refer to the Annex A for the list of outstanding award winners, and Annex B for their citations.
