LTA Awards Two Civil Contracts for the Construction of North-South Corridor Tunnels

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded two civil contracts totalling S$1.16 billion to construct the tunnel and commuter facilities, including pedestrian overhead bridges, bus stops, sheltered walkways, and cycling paths for two sections of the North-South Corridor (NSC); between Toa Payoh Rise and Marymount Lane as well as between Kampong Java Road and Suffolk Walk. Works on these contracts are expected to begin by end-2018.

2             The construction of a section of the NSC tunnel between Toa Payoh Rise and Marymount Lane has been awarded to Samsung C&T Corporation at a contract sum of S$602.6 million.

3             Samsung C&T Corporation will design and construct a 1.37km section of the tunnel with one exit ramp (please refer to Annex A for the location of this section of the NSC).

4             Samsung C&T Corporation is an established contractor in South Korea and has completed numerous road and railway infrastructure projects in South Korea and overseas. They also have a strong track record in Singapore, having completed several major projects including a 1.75km stretch of the Marina Coastal Expressway, the North-South Line’s Marina South Pier Station as well as the Downtown Line 3’s Expo and Upper Changi Stations.

5             Samsung C&T Corporation was also recently awarded the first NSC civil contract for the NSC tunnel between Novena Rise and Toa Payoh Rise, and is also currently involved in the construction of Xilin Station and tunnels, which are part of the Downtown Line Extension, as well as the Caldecott and Marine Parade Stations, which are part of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).

North-South Corridor tunnel between Kampong Java Road and Suffolk Walk

6             The construction of a section of the NSC tunnel between Kampong Java Road and Suffolk Walk has been awarded to Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited (Singapore Branch) and Yongnam Engineering & Construction (Private) Limited Joint Venture (Leighton-Yongnam JV) at a contract sum of S$553.8 million.

7             Leighton-Yongnam JV will design and construct a 0.64 km section of tunnel with an entry ramp and an exit ramp between Kampong Java Road and Suffolk Walk. The contract also includes the provision of commuter facilities and the widening of Rochor Canal (please refer to Annex B for the location of this section of the NSC).

8             Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited (Singapore Branch) is an established contractor in Australia that has completed many road and railway infrastructure projects in Singapore and overseas. They constructed Downtown Line 3’s Jalan Besar Station and tunnels, and are currently involved in the construction of TEL’s Springleaf Station and tunnels.

9             Yongnam Engineering & Construction (Private) Limited is an established local contractor that has been involved in many sub-contract works like steel-strutting and deep excavation for local road and rail tunnel projects. They are currently involved in the construction of six TEL stations.

About the NSC

The 21.5km NSC is Singapore’s first integrated transport corridor, featuring continuous bus lanes and at-grade cycling trunk routes, to serve public bus commuters, cyclists and pedestrians, in line with our car-lite vision. The NSC is expected to be completed in 2026. Please refer to Annex C for the NSC alignment.
