We refer to the ST Forum letter “All PMDs should be electronically tagged” dated 3 July by Mr Andrew Seow. We thank Mr Seow for his suggestions.
As many electric-scooters (e-scooters) are purchased online, it is not feasible to embed electronic tags into e-scooters at sale. Any means of identifying e-scooters has to be done through a registration regime. This is why the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be registering all e-scooters from early next year, and requiring them to have prominent identification stickers to help members of public identify reckless e-scooter riders.
Electronic tags would also require supporting systems, such as readers, to be effective for enforcement, whereas a physical identification sticker is easily recorded and reported to the relevant authorities.
The majority of reported incidents involve e-scooter riders above the age of 18.
LTA will work with members of public and law enforcement agencies to apprehend those responsible for hit and run incidents, regardless of their age. We will also continue to educate e-scooter riders on responsible behaviour.
