Car-Free Sunday to Return Next Month

News Releases 23 Feb 2024 Car-Free Sunday SG

The Land Transport Authority (LTA), Health Promotion Board (HPB), Housing & Development Board (HDB), National Parks Board (NParks), Sport Singapore (SportSG) and Urban Redevelopment Authority are working in collaboration to bring Car-Free Sunday to the Civic District and the Central Business District (CBD) on Sunday, 17 March 2024.

2        Car-Free Sunday 2024 promotes Singapore’s car-lite goal by creating greater public awareness of the benefits of walking, cycling and riding public transport as sustainable ways to travel. On Car-Free Sunday, designated roads in the Civic District and CBD will be closed to allow the public to enjoy activities on the streets without vehicular traffic. Through such interactions, we also hope to encourage pedestrians and Active Mobility device users to adopt etiquettes to share space safely and harmoniously.

3            From 8am to 2pm on 17 March, visitors can participate in various activities put together by LTA and partners at the two main event spaces along St Andrew’s Road and Esplanade Drive. From games to inline skating and aeromodelling, there will be activities catered to visitors of different ages.  Visitors can also walk, run or cycle along designated roads which will be closed to traffic from 8am to 11am.

Highlights of Car-Free Sunday 2024

4            Along St Andrew’s Road, visitors will be invited to journey through the “Corridor of Possibilities”. This is an immersive installation about creating vibrant and active community spaces that are also conducive for pedestrians and cyclists. The public is encouraged to share their personal stories, aspirations, and contribute to the shaping of our collective active mobility vision and experience. There will also be games for visitors to learn more about safe path and road sharing behaviours as well as the benefits of active mobility. They can also take part in a personality quiz to determine their active mobility “element” at the Car-Free Sunday 2024 website.

5        Visitors without their own bicycles can rent a shared-bike at the event. There will also be many other activities for visitors to take part in, such as the SportSG-organised Piloxing mass workout and a guided walk of the Civic District Tree Trail organised by NParks.

6        Over at Esplanade Drive, parents together with their children[1] can join guided activities such as inline skating and skateboarding under the HPB’s Active Family Programme. SportSG’s partners will also set up aeromodelling and korfball stations for visitors to try out these activities. Team Singapore athletes will also be present in support of a car-lite Singapore.

7        OCBC will be providing a chill-out area which offers all cyclists and visitors the chance to unwind and bond amidst the activities. Visitors can also look forward to Milo from a Milo van by Nestlé Singapore, as well as refreshments and food options available for purchase from The Goodburger Food Truck.

8        In support of Car-Free Sunday 2024, Singapore Fashion Runway (SFR), a social enterprise that nurtures people with special needs/ disadvantaged groups, has designed a special Active Mobility collection that will be launched at event. These include T-shirts, bucket hats, sling bags and zip pouches which will be modelled by SFR youths and available for purchase on the SFR website. Visitors can also participate in workshops with SFR youths to create collages featuring their own reimagined street spaces.

9        LTA Chief Executive Ng Lang said, “Besides promoting our car-lite goal and encouraging active mobility, we hope this edition of Car-Free Sunday can give the public a glimpse of what is possible when we reimagine our road spaces to be more Walk Cycle Ride-friendly.”

10          More information about the road closures and activities available at Car-Free Sunday 2024 will progressively be made available on the Car-Free Sunday 2024 website closer to the event.
