LTA Awards Civil Contract for Design and Construction of West Coast Station under Cross Island Line Phase 2

News Releases 06 Dec 2023 Cross Island Line civil contracts

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the civil contract for the design and construction of West Coast[1] station and tunnels under the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2) to Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch at a contract value of around $510 million.

2        Gamuda Berhad has an established track record in infrastructure and residential projects both locally and abroad. The company is currently involved in the design and construction of CRL Defu station and tunnels, as well as the Gali Batu Bus Depot.

Engineering Highlights

3        CRL West Coast Station is an underground station located along West Coast Road. Given its proximity to existing infrastructures such as residential and commercial buildings, necessary traffic and utilities diversion works will be implemented in phases to mitigate the impact to residents and other stakeholders.

4        The works are expected to be challenging, given the mixed ground conditions at this location, which include soft marine clay and hard sedimentary rocks. To ensure safety and ground stability, earth retaining and stabilising structures will be constructed prior to excavation and construction of the station structures. LTA and the contractor will closely monitor the works and implement necessary mitigation measures to ensure safe and timely completion.

5        Construction works for the CRL West Coast station are expected to start in the first quarter of 2024, with passenger service for CRL Phase 2 targeted to commence in 2032.

About the CRL

6        The CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line. It will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors, linking major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region. The CRL will have almost half of its stations as interchanges with other rail lines, making it easier and more convenient for commuters to travel across the rail network.

7        The fully underground CRL will be constructed in three phases. Announced in 2019, CRL Phase 1 is 29 kilometres long, and comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill.1 As of March 2022, all the civil contracts for CRL Phase 1 had been awarded. Construction works have commenced and are expected to complete by 2030. CRL Phase 2, announced in September 2022, is approximately 15 kilometres and comprises six underground stations - Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast and Jurong Lake District.1 Engineering studies for the CRL Phase 3 are ongoing and more details will be announced after these studies are completed.
