Inspection fees itemised based on required tests

Media Replies 20 Nov 2024 vehicle inspection electric vehicle

We refer to Mr Ho Peng Heng’s letter on reviewing charges for the annual inspection of electric vehicles (EVs) (Review charges for electric vehicles, 13 November 2024).

LTA requires all in-use motor vehicles, including EVs, to undergo compulsory periodic inspections to ensure they meet roadworthiness standards for the safety of all road users. Vehicle inspection fees are set by the authorised inspection centres, and the inspection fees are itemised according to the tests required for each vehicle type.

For example, both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles undergo similar inspections on common components such as tyres, steering, lighting, and braking systems. While EVs do not require engine-related inspections, EVs must still undergo checks specific to EV components, such as checking high-voltage electrical systems, charging inlets, high-voltage cables, traction batteries and electric motors, for signs of wear and tear or damage. On the other hand, hybrid and ICE vehicles are subject to additional emissions tests, such as high idle, hydrocarbon emission and smoke tests.
