Financial sustainability, commuter demand among considerations

When planning for public transport, including new rail lines and bus services, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) considers various factors such as commuter demand and demographics, land use plans, and the need to spend prudently to ensure financial sustainability for commuters and taxpayers. More trains and system upgrades for Circle Line
We thank Mr Keanen Ang for his letter “Look at rejuvenating Circle Line too” (March 12). The Circle Line (CCL) connects commuters to different MRT lines _ hence interchange stations along CCL can be more crowded during peak periods. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) monitors passenger loading on the CCL closely to make the best use of its capacity to meet travel demand and, when required, work with the train operator to inject more trains. Taxis - Cabbies encouraged to accept cashless payments
We refer to Ms Ng Cheng Hoon’s letter (Some taxi drivers at airport prefer cash over cards; March 4). All taxis in Singapore – except for a small number of individual-owned yellow-top taxis that do not have cashless payment terminals – are equipped to accept cashless payments such as via credit cards and/or Nets. Most taxis also accept other modes of cashless payments, including PayLah and EZ-Link. For more details, please refer to the attached reply.

Expanding our Rail Network and Strengthening Rail Reliability and Resilience
Singapore’s rail network is set to expand as announced at the Ministry of Transport’s Committee of Supply debate today. LTA plans to proceed with the West Coast Extension which extends the Jurong Region Line to connect with the Circle Line and Cross Island Line. Feasibility studies are also ongoing for new rail lines to further improve access to public transport. Concurrent with these expansion efforts, additional investments will be made to support tripartite efforts to maintain the reliability of our existing rail network. Joint News Release by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) & MHA - Friendlier and Safer Walk Cycle Ride Journeys
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is continuing efforts to enhance road safety and inclusivity in Singapore to encourage walking, cycling and taking public transport. First, LTA will expand the Friendly Streets initiative to 15 more locations. Second, to ensure that our roads are safer for young children, we will extend the lower speed limit of 40km/h along School Zones near primary schools to apply throughout the entire day, instead of only at specific hours. Third, we will embark on three new road repurposing projects to create more seamless connections to amenities, and safer pedestrian zones. Strengthening Singapore’s Electric Vehicle Ecosystem to Reduce Land Transport Emissions
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is pressing on with our vehicle electrification efforts. To support decarbonisation of heavy vehicles, LTA will introduce the Heavy Vehicle Zero Emissions Scheme (HVZES) and Electric Heavy Vehicle Charger Grant (EHVCG). These initiatives aim to narrow the gap in ownership cost between an electric heavy vehicle (eHV) and an ICE heavy vehicle, and to support the deployment of eHV chargers in Singapore. In addition, LTA will extend and expand the EV Common Charger Grant (ECCG) to further encourage charger deployment at non-landed private residences (NLPRs), such as condominiums, and keep pace with EV adoption.
