Leveraging technology is a key aspect of the Government’s transformation efforts, creating opportunities to review and refine rules and processes to better serve citizens and businesses. One such area of review is to simplify the payment process when a motorist misses an Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charge.      

2            Today, when a motorist fails to pay an ERP charge at the point of passing a gantry, they will receive a letter in a few days, requiring them to make the missed ERP payment plus a $10 administrative charge. The administrative charge is levied to cover the costs incurred by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to recover outstanding payments. 

3            With ERP2.0, we will be able to reduce backend processing costs. The On-Board Unit (OBU) will detect and process missed ERP payments. LTA is developing a new feature on the OBU that will notify motorists of any missed ERP payments and facilitate payments. This new feature will be rolled out from mid-2025. More details will be shared when ready. 

4            With a view to these upcoming features, LTA has done a review and will introduce a five-day grace period for the payment of missed ERP charges. If the payment is made within this period, the motorist will not need to pay the $10 administrative charge. This grace period will be extended to all motorists from 1 October 2024. 

From 1 October 2024: SMS Notification and a five-day grace period to make missed ERP payment without a $10 administrative charge

5            From 1 October 2024, LTA will first send SMS notifications for missed ERP payments.  Motorists will be given a five-day grace period from the date the SMS is sent to pay the missed ERP charge. There will be no $10 administrative charge imposed if payment is made during this period. 

6            If the missed ERP payment was not made within the grace period, LTA will issue a letter to the motorist, who must pay the missed ERP charge plus a $10 administrative charge. Failing which, a fine of $70 will be issued. 

7            To ensure that motorists receive the SMS from LTA and can benefit from the five-day grace period, motorists are reminded to keep their Singapore-registered mobile number updated on the Singpass website.
