Every year around 22 September, cities across the globe celebrate World Car-Free Day to encourage motorists to give up their cars for a day. 

The event highlights the benefits of a car-lite lifestyle — including reduced air pollution, lower carbon footprint and walking and cycling in a safer environment.

Port/raits of Tanjong Pagar showcases the dramatic transformations of the district over the decades, through a series of public artworks by five artists and collectives: Aki Hassan, Divaagar, Space Objekt, Grace Tan and Isabella Teng. These artworks are located across the public spaces between Outram Park MRT station and Singapore Art Museum’s present location at the Tanjong Pagar Distripark.

Journey across the various locations of Tanjong Pagar Distripark, Everton Park, Duxton Plain Park and Tanjong Pagar Plaza to discover the softer side of the neighbourhood, which is a testament to Singapore’s transition into a metropolis.

Singapore Deviation: Wander with Art through the Rail Corridor

"walk walk" (Singapore Deviation version)

Inspired by a commonplace activity along the Rail Corridor, walk walk (Singapore Deviation version) is a video and an installation on the theme of walking. Walking is a carefully managed practice in Singapore, shaped by public agencies and private developers. The island-nation is designed to be very walkable, with air-conditioned shopping malls and well-maintained sidewalks shaded by trees. Siting this work in a bus terminal, artist Tan Pin Pin highlights ideas about freedom of movement, how walking is a basic expression of this freedom, and how public transportation further supports our mobility.

Naval-themed Station at Expo Station

SBS Transit and Defence Collective Singapore (DCS) have launched an innovative showcase to enrich passengers' journeys, by integrating Singapore's defence story with the public transport network. This showcase provides participants with a unique and immersive experience while on the move. 

The year-long showcase transforms Expo MRT station (DT35) into a first-of-its-kind navy museum themed environment across three stories. Explore captivating displays such as a physical 3D submarine model, naval-themed sceneries, and augmented reality (AR) elements activated by QR codes placed around the station. 

To extend the immersive experience beyond the showcase at Expo station, the public can enjoy a weekend journey via a shuttle bus from the station to the Singapore Navy Museum for a fun and educational weekend trip!

Comic Connect

Comic Connect is a collaboration between Singapore’s pioneer rail operator and members of the local art community to install heritage-themed comic wall murals across 35 SMRT-operated MRT stations island-wide. Launched in June 2022, Comic Connect murals have been unveiled at 32 stations. The next – and 33rd MRT station – to feature a mural will be Holland Village MRT station on the Circle Line.
